Countless movies, stories, and tales have spun gold out of the concept
of extrasensory perception (often referred to as ESP). Consider popular
television shows and films like Medium and The Sixth Sense. People are
fascinated with the paranormal – Ouija boards and tarot card readings,
once considered taboo and even somewhat dark – are now popular games
sold in Toys R Us. But with all this talk and publicity, much of the
origin and science of extrasensory perception has been obscured. The
actual definition of extrasensory perception is the “ability to acquire
information by means other than the five canonical senses (taste, sight,
touch, smell, and hearing), or any other sense well-known to science
(balance, proprioception, etc)”, but there are several different types
of ESP, as well as interpretations of it.
Before getting into all
the different ideas and challenges associated with extrasensory
perception, let's first consider the history of ESP. The concept itself
goes way back, far before popular culture turned it into a cultural
phenomenon of sorts. In fact, in many past cultures (i.e. ancient China
and Egypt), it was simply expected that people could communicate
mentally with others, including the dead, gods, and other supernatural
spirits. While this possibility has been heavily criticized as, at best,
speculation and at worst, pure superstition, plenty of accounts (both
ancient and relatively recent) have described incidents of extrasensory
perception, as well as everyday use of it for divination.
So, the
big question is: Do people actually have ESP and can it be proved? Many
paranormal scientists have run experiments to test the veracity of
alleged psychic abilities and
many have come out shocked and amazed at the results. It seems that ESP
may be a little more likely than anyone previously thought. In fact,
some paranormal studies have found that alleged psychics
seem able to foretell the contents of sealed envelopes and accurately
draw images identical to those of people drawing the same image from a
remote locale. Parapsychology (especially the area of extrasensory
studies) has grown both in venerability and believer population. In
fact, many large universities now have Parapsychology programs including
Edinburgh University in Scotland.
Most claims of psychic readings
and abilities are similar to the three most commonly reported
extrasensory happenings which include telepathy, clairvoyance, and
precognition. Telepathy is defined as mental communication between two
or more people. It entails one person sending or receiving thoughts to
or from another person via some sort of mental or emotional link.
Clairvoyance
is often called a “second sight” or a “sixth sense” -- that is to say,
the person perceives events happening in a location other than his or
her present one, without having any previous knowledge of the event. For
example, a clairvoyant person may sense that something is wrong with a
friend or a family member to find that he or she was in trouble. They
also may “know” that their house is being robbed as they are out to
dinner. Precognition, on the other hand, is also known as “fortune
telling” or “foresight” and entails the ability to know or predict what
will happen in the future. Many prophets (including very false ones)
have risen to fame – and even religious worship -- through their
apparent ability to predict the events of the future.

Breaking Down Numerology
Numerology is the use of numbers and number combinations in divination. Numerology is often used as part of psychic readings.
Each number corresponds to a meaning. They also correspond to the
letters of the alphabet. It is though these meanings and correspondences
that numerology is interpreted and charts are made for divination.
The
numbers used are zero through 10. Any number larger than 10 is broken
down by adding the two digits of the number together to get a single
digit number. The following explains the generally accepted meanings of
the number zero through ten:
0- everything and nothing all at once
1- singular, individual
2- balance, pair
3- communication
4- creation
5- action
6- responsibility
7- the mind, thought
8- power
9- the end
10- begin again
The
meanings of the numbers vary often according to each numerologist.
However, in general the above meanings are a good representation of the
number meanings that are most often used. Sometimes the numbers 11 and
22 are assigned special meaning as prime number that represent the most
important and meaningful numbers in numerology.
The numbers also
are related to the letters of the alphabet. For this numbers 1 through
26 are used. Usually in numerology reports a persons name is written out
then labeled with number for each letter. The numbers are then added
together and brought down to a digit between one and ten. For example:
Sue becomes the number 18/20/5
18 becomes 9
20 becomes 2
5 stays as 5
Then it is added: 9+2+5=16
The answer, 16, is reduced to a single digit of 7
This
is the basis of translated words into numerology. It is an important
part of the process, though and something every numerologist needs to
know.
Numerology charts are often done for one person or can be
made to compare two people, such as in a relationship. Numerology
reports often tell about the inner workings of a person or relationship.
A
numerologist has to be able to make the connection between letters and
number, as well as be able to add and interpret the meanings behind the
results of their work. Numerology reports are often long and take quite a
bit of time to finish. Reports are often based upon the name and date
of birth of a person. The name and date of birth are broken down into
various equations that each mean something different.
A
numerologist should only need the basic information, name and date of
birth, to complete a natal numerology chart. For more complex charts
they may need additional information. Relationship charts require the
names of both individuals and their birth dates and may require the date
of the anniversary, depending on the reading to be done.
Numerology
requires a lot of skill to be able to remember all the corresponding
details of numbers and letters. A numerologist also has to learn the
different meanings of the numbers and the different formulas for coming
up with the results of a reading. It can take some time to learn
numerology, but it is not as difficult as it may seem. A good
numerologist will be able to explain the process to their clients and be
able to answer any questions they may have.
Numerology is a form of divination and can be used on a smaller scale with other forms of divination like tarot readings or rune casting. Numbers have always held special meanings and they can add depth to a tarot reading or rune casting. Many psychic readers associate numbers with their readings, as sometimes they may receive messages in the form of numbers.

Debunking Psychics
Have you ever been curious about your future? Have you ever called a phone psychic to get some answers?
If you wonder how “psychics” work, read on. This article is for you.
Most “psychics”
are plain scammers. They use cold reading to make calculated guess
about the sitters. Cold reading is an interactive psychological
technique which extracts information from a person through verbal and
non verbal cues. More often than not, psychics
utilize known psychology techniques that can apply to almost anyone. An
example would be claiming the sitter is cursed and he or she could lift
that curse for a fee, because most people visit a psychic
when they are down and depressed, “being cursed” is a quick, convenient
reason to blame. Paying the fee to lift the curse would be the quickest
solution to their complicated life problems.
There seems to be several common factors in psychic readings. The psychic usually:
+Skillfully extracts information from non verbal cues such as breathing patterns, voice, dress, skin color, and body language.
+
Makes statements that seem to give information when they are actually
out to fish for it. E.g. Prompts feedback from sitters by saying “I see a
man in uniform, why would that be?”
+Feeds back to the subject what the latter wants to hear
+Makes general “Barnum statements” such as “You are worrisome on the outside but insecure on the inside.”
The
sitter of the reading is the key to a 'successful' reading. The
sitter's willingness to connect vague 'clues' came up by the psychic
will often decide how successful the reading is. Many sitters who try
to contact their deceased loved ones are very motivated in the first
place, and will take the psychic's message as a sign that he or she have made contact with the other side. That is why psychics subtly encourage cooperation before and during the reading. Once the psychic gains the trusts of the sitter, the latter usually actively supply information and clarifications.
Although
facial expressions and body languages could mean differently to people
from different cultural backgrounds, many psychologists believe that
certain facial and body expressions are universal to the mankind.
How
to tell dominance: People who dominates have a tenancy to stand up with
an erected body, speaks slowly and rarely, and look people in their
eyes for an extended period of time. Because of the demonstrated link
between testosterone and aggression, people with square jaws (
testosterone induced feature) are thought as more domineering and
aggressive.
How to tell submissiveness: Submissive people touches
themselves a lot when they are confronted with a difficult situation.
This is because human have an inborn mechanism acquired very early on in
life to link physical touching with comfort and safety.
